Summer Qi Chats | Week 1

Heart to heart

This week I want to draw the connection of the heart and the Insular lobe and what that means to us…

The Mind Body Connection

We may have heard the term ‘mindbody’ but let’s discuss what that can mean neurologically. We are constantly seeking homeostasis so our brain has a predictive reading on the function of the body. All these inputs go to the 5th lobe in the brain known as the insular lobe. I call it the ‘teenager lobe’ as it usually asks “who am I? What is this all about?”

The insular lobe tends to have a stronger behavioral and emotional response to these inputs. Been hangry lately?

To the heart of the matter…

The neurological connection of the Heart system (spirit of the Shen) and our bodies is an incredible link towards healing. However, people can lose that connection of the mind to the body and vice versa due to trauma, injury and pain in general. So what happens when we lose that connection?

I have worked with people who’s spirit is affected when the brain disconnects from the body (and the body from the brain.) This protective mechanism isn’t faulty but demonstrates the need to reconnect when we’re wanting to heal and create a neuroplastic change in the body.

Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!

Love to heal

  • The vagus nerve again?! Yup, with better vagal tone, we can experience better bodily input that is driven to the insular lobe

  • Find your heart - the finger tip game is a great interoceptive connection in Qigong.
