Autumn Qi Chats | Week 8

How are you going to age?

This week let’s discuss the topic of how you live your life can alter your thoughts on aging.

Neurogenesis and the Great Debate

There’s a big conflict in neuroscience whether an aging brain can still grown and change. The debate is mainly focused around the hippocampus which plays a large role in memory and learning. Located in the temporal lobe, the hippocampus is associated with cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimers and dementia. Both acute and chronic stress are known to decrease hippocampal neurogenesis.

The good news…

Lifestyle does play a major role in the preservation of the hippocampus. There is evidence of enhanced hippocampal neurogenesis following exercise. Plus, a calming lifestyle can affect whether there is an increase or decrease in hippocampal neurogenesis. Environmental factors play a role ranging from care, food, financial support etc.
