Summer Qi Chats | Week 3

Are you a good driver?

This week we should discuss your driving skills and how visual training can make you better at reacting.

Better Vision = Faster Reaction

Rarely do we associate the ability of our eyes with speed. But when your visual input is better received, your brain can make a faster decision so your reaction is instant. This week, we explored lifesaving skills with visual training in order to act or inhibit faster. This is a finely embedded survival skill that we need to continue to train so we can react in specific situations.

Playing with inhibition can be a lifesaving skill that can improve your reaction time in the car. Have you ever considered how neurologically challenging certain skills are?

WATCH OUT!

Remember the game “Simon Says”? It was about immediate action and inhibition. We need to process commands and properly react so we can avoid injury or issue. Just know, this is a skill. One that you need to train. We can play various games that will teach our cerebellum and frontal lobe to do what’s asked of us to survive.

Inhibition training affects us from three differ perspectives:

  • Motor level: Poor control in motor reaction can affect how we move. For example: moving out of the way, swatting a bee off someone’s shirt, stepping on the breaks.

  • Attentional level: Manifests itself in distractibility and difficulty paying attention. For example: looking at every car that passes you on the highway, not keeping focused while practicing Qigong, etc.

  • Behavioral level: Manifests itself in impulsive behavior that cannot be inhibited. For example: getting upset with someone because you’re ‘hangry’ or honking your horn because someone cut you off.
