Winter Qi Chats | Week 10

Scared of falling?

This week we dive deeper into fall preparation work as it’s important to remember that yes, we all will have a moment when we fall.

The “F” word

As discussed before, the possibility of falling is probable. It happens when we’re lease expecting it and it’s important to know that you have to train to fall. Continuing from Week 4’s Balance Qi Time chat, let’s dive deeper into how we can stop being so afraid of the ‘F’ word.

The Fallen

I have seen the after affect of people who’ve taken a spill and beyond the injury, it’s the emotional side of healing that needs to take place post fall. The fear of the experience and the uncertainty that is associated with the body’s ability can affect movement and pain long term. When we fall, we take a snap shot of our internal and external environment. As a Neuro-based Movement Therapist, I always ask clients who come to me “What was happening, when what happened, happened?” Meaning, I’m interested in that snap shot.

Broader details like, “I was in my garage carrying a box in the dark when I fell.” is good for me to break down where you were looking, your positioning when you fell, etc. But I also like to know your environmental state and emotional state because your brain has to heal around EVERYTHING as that fall can be that impactful if you’re still in pain weeks post-fall. And we all start wtih one thing… you bet. The Breath.

Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!

When I fall…

  • When you fall, begin Tortoise breathing to calm the body and begin assessing your situation (as long as you’re not in danger, just stay put and assess)

  • Talk to yourself, “whoa, that was spooky but I’m safe now.” If you’re hurt, have a similar conversation before you begin to panic.

  • Epsom salt baths, arnica, Tylenol, Acupuncture, warm wraps, icy hot, CBD balms, etc. Get ahead of the pain in the acute stage post-fall.
