Winter Qi Chats | Week 2

Are you massaging your MingMen?

This week we discuss the WHY behind all the massage we do in class and how this benefits you this winter.

What’s the Ming Men and who cares?

The Ming Men is an area of the low back around L2 and L3 that anatomically is a sticky fascial location of the spine that serve as an indicator of what changes need to be made in your lifestyle and movement. Think of Ming Men as your body’s pilot light. We need this ongoing source of energy to create something larger as a whole.

The Ming Men is located just by the kidneys and in CM, we look at the Yin & Yang Kidney as our source of pure Qi. We discussed our Qi Savings Account last week and this is where it’s stored. Rather precious, right? Energetically, your Kidney’s blend this Yin Yang Qi to help with organ function and Qi flow. When this area is activated, we feel calm and connected with our breath & selves. Our nervous system is in a more balanced state.

Massage

We’ve begun each class with the gentle Pai Da by tapping the Ming Men and the belly button. This connects your Ming Men (pilot light) and Lower Dan Tian (source of Qi) to connect to build this internal fire. Think of this source as an ongoing loop of energy that feeds off itself and harmonizes with the simplicity of flow.
This flow is important to the entire body as we need the fountain source to reuse and regenerate itself, meaning we need to move that blood and lymph for the flow of Qi. Hence the reason we massage so often during Winter. Our movements may get smaller but the flow of Qi is there present.
