Winter Qi Chats | Week 7

Beauty and the Beast

This week we discuss Like the love/prisoner relationship of the neck and shoulder. Learn how to increase shoulder stability by looking at your cervical spine’s mobility..

When in doubt, return to the midline

You may be well aware that often, any issues down the arm will be rooted in the neck as this is where the nerve begins. It makes sense that pain, weakness and lack of control may have a large part on the periphery nerves. It’s a great place to start. So we move to the neck for an assessment.

Moving from the arm issue and up to the shoulder, it’s also an initial consideration that we can address any instabilities of the neck to access better neural connection of those nerves that activate shoulder mobility. Do you have much cervical control in your movement? Many forget about the neck as a functional body part but no longer! It’s a functional staple to our body’s stability. The neck holds the head steady and stabilizes the inner ear as you move. The neck affects your vision as it need precision in directional movement for minimal error. The neck needs training just as much as your shoulder!

Mobility vs Tension

It just depends on how the central nervous system is going to respond to the drill so this where we need to consider ASSESS & REASSESS when it comes to what will best help your shoulder mobility and stability. We are going to work on two drills that will either serve as an asset to your shoulder training or another piece to the puzzle of what your brain and body needs to maximum control.

Tension around the front of the chest (brachial plexus) is common, especially with how many of us hold our bodies during the winter season. The shoulder joint is pushed forward and the neck is immobile and under tension. So let’s get involved with what will create a better map of the cervical spine to improve the shoulder’s muscular response to load and movement.

Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!

Can you do this?

  • Let’s review two cervical tensioning and mobility sequences to help your shoulder

  • Making time for neck exercises throughout the week is necessary
