Summer Qi Chats | Week 11

Can you monkey around with your mobility?

This week we discuss what you can DO with all this training and how training isn’t the only answer to better aging.

Let’s play!

Often I will see people in the gym and wonder “what do they do with all that training?” At one point, I began to ask gym goers what activity they enjoyed and while some had an answer, others were perplexed. You see, training the body is smart as it is intentional but we need to make ALL OUR MOVEMENT salient so we can obtain our goals. Whether it’s the goal to be functional around the house so you can have younger guests (grandkids visiting), wanting to travel or the want to play pickle ball, hike, etc… you ideally want to train FOR something.

THE GET DOWN

Last week I showed you the benefits of WHY we exercises the way we do in prevents of injury or speeding up the process post-injury.However we want to enjoy the movement of our bodies while continuing to explore what we can be challenged by. When we begin setting wider boundaries around immobility we look the neural pathway to activate our brain in a way where we CANNOT perform certain movement. Emotions set in (fear, frustration, anxiety, depression) around the immobility and we create a neural imprint in the brain that says “no”. The reality is, even when there’s movement we cannot perform, it’s wise to continue to WATCH the movement and allow the brain to see how it’s done with the probability that you could do it too.

Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!

See + Know

  • Stop before pain but don’t distance yourself from the movement entirely

  • Get creative in exploring your own pathway for the movement

  • Step back and know that often there IS a way to train for play
