Summer Qi Chats | Week 10

Why is this so difficult?

This week we discuss the urgent need of FLOOR SITTING and how much we all need to implement this into our daily, yes DAILY lives!

Just mixing up our dinner routine…

My 7yo son asked if we could do a picnic on our patio for dinner the other night. We had a warm breeze that felt nice and the want for being outside on a lovely summer early evening sounded divine. We laid out our food on a blanket and got comfortable to enjoy our meal.

But it was within 5 minutes my husband got up to get a cushion to sit on. He asked if I needed anything and I declined but the thought of something raised & soft to sit on did pass my mind. I too was finding it difficult to sit on the ground while maintain an upright torso to eat. It was within this moment I declared to the family “Oh my goodness, we need to get back into picnic dinner once a week!”

IF YOU DON’T USE IT

It was only a year ago we discussed a similar topic about using the floor for other activities but at that time, I was having 2 weekly picnic dinners with the family and the habit was engrained in my body’s ability to sit for a longer period of time on the floor. And then… I dunno.

Winter passed us by and a busy Spring pulled us back towards the table to sit in our chairs and we failed to remember our family picnics until it was warm outside. This rude awaken was felt in my hips & low back. My husband too.
We have odd functional abilities that we need to continue from the Summer into our other seasons. I learned mine.

What is yours?

  • How often have you rolled on the floor?

  • Can you enjoy an easy to eat dinner on the floor?

  • What does it look like to sit on the floor for over 20 minutes and how easy are you able to get back up?

Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!

Functional Movement Check-in

  • Shift your mindset around the knowledge that ‘sitting with control’ is a skill that you can train daily

  • Sit down and stand up off a chair SLOWLY + with CONTROL (yes, you should do this in your bathroom as well as long as you feel safe!)

  • For one minute practice your stand up/lie down drills & be sure you practice in various directions, speeds & angles!
