Autumn Qi Chats | Week 2
Do you know your midline?
This week we discuss how you can check in with yourself to better address midline stability and abiltiy.
What does the midline consist of?
Let’s create a checklist of what the midline pertains to and then we can discuss WHY each of these systems and functions are so important to us.
First, your midline is often discussed during balance training, back or knee pain therapy and/or even pelvic floor rehab. But do YOU actually know what consists of midline training and is there something MISSING from your rehab?
We’ll discuss this at length in today’s Qi Chat but also know, as you move up the midline assessment, sometimes one system or structure isn’t working because there’s a neurological component that’s affecting the body’s ability to function.
YOUR MIDLINE CHECKLIST BABY!
Pelvic floor engagement AND relaxation (sometimes forgotten) - also acknowledge that trauma leads to PF dysfunction
Skeletomuscular structure of pelvis, sacroiliac joint, on up the lower lumbar spine - do you have stable mobility?
Breathing mechanics - is my ribcage and diaphragm moving when I breathe?
Thoracic and ribcage mobility - this is a crucial part to proper breathing mechanics but mobility is also important for stability
Jaw and tongue positioning - your face needs a place to hang out and often the jaw & tongue are searching
Vestibular and visual system - part of your midline structure, we should ALWAYS address the two as we train midline
Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!
CHECK YOURSELF
Write down these points & as you watch the chat, note down what you need to evaluate and assess. Take time this Autumn to reflect on what your midline needs
A great drill is banded breathing as you’ve been learning in class. Wrapping a band around the ribs, you can breathe with a guided tool to help with ribs, pelvic floor, low back and more!
