Are happy shoulders a young man’s game?

This week’s Qi Time chat leads us to talk
about how shoulder mobility and intention can keep you functional and strong.

When was the last time you used your shoulders?

Perhaps you take the time to climb a tree 3 days a week or maybe you enjoy blending Pilates into your Bamboo Bodies training. I encourage both! But for most of us, our shoulders only are used when ‘needed’. And unfortunately for us, the brain goes by the familiar saying of ‘Use it or lose it.’

Hey I’m using that!

The brain doesn’t need to waste time on an area that isn’t being used. Neurologically, motor control takes a lot of fuel and if we don’t use the shoulders, then the brain won’t waste energy to that area. Which is why daily, yes DAILY shoulder movement is important. No only are you structurally developing a stronger shoulder but you’re telling the brain “Hey, I’m using that” and your brain’s map of the shoulder will improve from a sensory & motor perspective.

Besides, shoulder movement will improve the more you train the shoulder in the most natural ways. I see my client’s arm swing come back after just a few simple exercises! We need that natural arm swing when we walk as it upregulates areas of the brain to improve our balance, vision and spinal posture.

Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!

Reach for the stars!

  • Reach to the top of your door frame every time you pass through. This allows the shoulders to be ‘used’ and engaged. Plus, if you can hang from the door frame that slight traction is wonderful for shoulder health

  • Circle City. Okay it’s time to play! I created a fun shoulder game and all I need you to do is download this coordination chart by clicking here. It’s novel way to train the shoulder at home!
