Spring Qi Chats | Week 10

Can you get back up? Because it’s so worth it!

This week we discuss ways that you can use the floor to your advantage.

The Fall before the Storm

When was the last time you fell? Mine was two years ago as I was crossing a busy street and my shoe lace hooked onto my other show (eye roll here!) and I feel like a chopped tree. I was fortunate that I caught myself with my ‘bear paws’ (forearm to finger tips) but I was stunned, embarrassed and couldn’t yet decide if I was hurt, or my ego was injured more. Now this story has a sad reality that no one, NO ONE came to my aid. As I scrambled up, I picked up groceries and gathered my dignity as I hurried towards the sidewalk to assess for any injuries. In the end, I was fine!

Bamboo Bodies students tout about their falls and are so grateful for not hurting themselves due to their training with seasonal fitness. Knowing how to train for the unexpected is a BIG factor in why we move the way we do in these classes. But we do need to talk about the brief moment after the fall when we need to muster our strength and stand up.
How has that been for you?
How will that be in another 20 years?

KNOW YOUR ROUTES

The art and skill of getting down of the floor is not just for the ways we can move ON THE FLOOR but you are not given the inevitable task of getting up off the floor. But HOW you get back up off the floor can be explored as you would when finding a new route home. Think of your movement as this amazing Atlas of movement maps. Hundreds of pages that give routes of movement.

Cleaning a stove (movement map - bam!)
Walking uphill (movement map - bam!)
Brushing your teeth (movement map - bam!)
Crawling like a Tiger (movement map - bam!)

So it’s evident that getting up off the floor is a specific route, a specific movement map. However, we need to improve that motor map with variations for how to get there. An Atlas doesn’t show ONE route from Seattle to Boise. You see multiple roads and highways that will get you there. You will most likely take the road most traveled but if there’s a necessary need - you may need to take another route. And if you KNOW those other routes, the journey won’t be so frustrating.

Same with your body’s motor maps. Have you brushed your teeth with your non-dominant hand? Every try crawling like a tiger down your hallway rather than walking? Explore your movement from the ground up and explore MULTIPLE ways to get up off the floor!
