Spring Qi Chats | Week 8

What are you doing to age a better brain?

This week we discuss how you can identify habits that may be causing inflammation to your brain.

Inflammaging

Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury or infection, where the immune system activates to remove harmful stimuli and initiate the healing process. While acute inflammation is a necessary response, chronic inflammation can cause damage to tissues and contribute to various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease.

In Alzheimer's disease, inflammation is believed to play a role in the progression of the disease. The accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain triggers an inflammatory response. This chronic inflammation can cause damage to neurons and lead to cognitive decline.

Additionally, inflammation can contribute to the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, a protective layer that prevents harmful substances from entering the brain, this is now being dubbed as ‘leaky brain’. When this barrier is compromised, inflammatory molecules and immune cells can enter the brain, further exacerbating the inflammation and damage to neurons.

Overall, the relationship between inflammation and Alzheimer's disease is complex and multifactorial. While inflammation is a natural response to injury or infection, chronic inflammation in the brain can contribute to the progression of Alzheimer's disease.
