Spring Qi Chats | Week 9

Train your feet for success

This week we discuss ways that you can awaken the feet to the Spring season.

Fashion over function

We began the conversation of minimalist shoes in this week’s Basics and Intermediate classes. Let’s take a look at shoes and how they were made to squish, numb, reshape and stupefy your feet. We have to take into consideration the history of the shoe has nothing to do with function and hundreds of years later, we’re still stuck in fashion trends that can hurt us. But in knowing how to purchase a more ‘functional’ shoe, does this mean your feet are trained enough to WEAR the functional shoe?

Making the change

Exercises for the foot don’t have to take a lot of your time. In fact, there’s a LOT of passive stimulus that you an apply daily. First one is TAKE THE SHOES OFF and walk around! Just returning your foot to it’s ‘natural’ wear creates a beginning platform to train from, taking in mind that you have to start slowly. We don’t normally make the time for self-care but when we do, we dumb in ALL the hours into one practice. Making the time for change is going to start small.

5 minutes a day is a great start

If you normally never go barefoot, then walk around the house for 5 minutes then return to your shoes. If you have never tried toe spacers, then wear them for only 5 minutes each day. Add 5 minutes every week to your active or passive drills. It’s about retraining the foot, not shocking the foot into function. Doesn’t work that way!

Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!

Make the space

  • Toes spacers are an option but so is your band, a kleenex, paper towel, etc.

  • Go over your Week 9 videos + WRITE DOWN YOUR DRILLS!

  • Apply this in your home on a daily basis if you aim to train your feet for minimalist shoes (I like Vivobarefoot but there’s a lot out there!)
